The Origins of Board Games

Here’s a fun historical fact about board games – the beginning of games – it has been around for over 5,000 years! The earliest known board games were played by the ancient Egyptians, with artifacts like the "Senet" board dating back to around 3500 B.C. Senet, originating from ancient Egypt, enjoyed popularity from the Predynastic Period to the Late Period (664–332 B.C.). Its distinctive board features three rows of ten squares, with the final five squares adorned consistently. Players navigated their pieces in an S-shaped direction known as boustrophedon. In the New Kingdom (ca. 1550–1070 B.C.), Senet, meaning "passing," symbolized the journey to the afterlife. Depictions of Senet-playing appear in chapter 17 of the Book of the Dead and adorn tomb walls. While Senet and Mehen were exclusive to Egypt, variants existed in neighboring regions like the Levant and Cyprus, while games like Twenty Squares and Hounds and Jackals were discovered as far as Turkey and the Iranian Plateau.

While the rules of these ancient games remain a mystery, their existence serves as a testament to humanity's enduring love for playful competition.
